Open wide, its good for you

Perhaps the words, “open up, this is good for you,” bring back childhood memories of cod liver oil slipping down your throat.

Whether you remember it fondly or with a shudder, you swallowed one of the world’s healthiest foods.

Cod liver oil provides necessary doses of Vitamins A and D. The latter vitamin is a key component to building strong bones in newborns and young children and maintaining them as we age.

For centuries, it bolstered health and well-being particularly in Northern European fishing villages from Scotland’s Shetland Islands to throughout Scandinavia. Then as now, winter weather is harsh and the sun’s seasonal appearance brief.

By the mid-18th century the oil’s healing properties were discovered to also benefit those afflicted with rheumatism. Advocates grew to include people with chronic dry skin, brittle nails and hair.

Throughout the 19th century and up until the mid-20th, millions of bottles of cod liver oil were consumed in pursuit of good health.

So what happened?

Youth Building with Dr. Howard Murad

Your reflection mirrors your shock and dismay.

When did those wrinkles around your eyes deepen, and is that your grandmother’s papery thin neck skin developing under your chin?

Some might feel the advancement of years equals never-ending physical decay.  But instead of resigning yourself to wearing sunglasses and turtlenecks forever – try instead “youth building” through Inclusive Health®.

Our friend and famed dermatologist, Howard Murad, M.D., F.A.A.D., discovered that the aging process causes cell membranes to lose elasticity and release vital intracellular moisture. That moisture is the base for a robust body as demonstrated through firmer skin, healthy hearts and even lush hair.

Expanding your Fruit and Veg Appreciation

www.fit-journey.com
Your healthy battle against obesity will benefit from eating a variety of fruits and vegetables.

A key to maintaining your fitness diet is keeping the food interesting. Carrots, celery and iceberg lettuce are fine, but dull.

Now is the time to become an explorer

Discover some new sources of vitamins and minerals by strolling through a farmer’s market, or a store particularly one with Asian and Hispanic produce.

If they are unusual looking to you, banish your shyness and eagerly ask, “What is this and how do I eat it?”

Your taste buds and shrinking waistline will appreciate your curiosity.

The Joys of Joining a CSA

River Dog Farms, Guinda CA
Bite into a succulent strawberry or nibble on a steamed asparagus spear to appreciate how fruits and vegetables are delicious ways to lose weight.

As you decrease chomping down on unhealthy foods, your palate becomes more refined and robust.

You now desire produce full of the freshest tastes. No longer do you want to eat raw spinach or raspberries and get a mouthful of chemical additives, required for the long transportation – often from foreign countries.

You want to taste the multiple weeks’ worth of bright sunshine that ripened a tomato – not bland red glop.

Calorie Loss While Commuting

www.fit-journey.com
Whether driving a car or as a strap hanger on a bus or in a subway, grab some exercise while getting to your destination.

If you’re driving, however, be sure to ONLY do these exercises while stopped and not while driving.

Additional activity can mean the difference of a few more pounds lost or getting off a stubborn weight loss plateau.

This does not mean breaking into an aerobic routine on a subway platform or at a bus stop. Just take advantage of the extra time with the following exercises.

Breaking the Fast Food Habit

www.fit-journey.com
Your time and perhaps budget is limited. For added pressure, the desperate pleading of hungry children echo from your vehicle’s backseat.

Suddenly, on the horizon glitters a pair of golden arches, a large bell or a smiling old Southern man.

Hurrah! Instant satisfaction is near.

Turning into the drive-thru, the kids’ squeals of delight cannot squelch the loud disagreement happening inside your head.

“You know this is not healthy eating,” screams one part of your brain.

“It is all okay,” counters another section with a condescending tone. “I’ll eat a salad.”

Yeah, right.

Overcoming Bullies' Giggles

For all us weight loss warriors, there comes the uncomfortable moment when our wiggle, especially during exercise, makes others giggle or worse.

Anyone, other than a young baby, finding amusement as our bellies jiggle, and boobs bounce is rude.

Unfortunately, overcoming others’ boorish behavior can be difficult.

One trick is to beat the buffoons to the punch… with a great punchline.

British comedian, Dawn French, best known for her Vicar of Dibley portrayal, once remarked, “if I had been around when Rubens was painting, I would have been revered as a fabulous model. Kate Moss? Well, she would have been the paintbrush!”

By referring to the 17th Flemish artist with a flair for painting luscious plus-sized woman focuses attention to your brain -not your butt. It informs any would-be smart asses you are a smart cookie not willing to accept bullying.

Sometimes stronger measures are required.

Obesity is Just a Term, Not a Life Sentence

www.fit-journey.com
Obese, like tardy and spendthrift, is a descriptive word most of us would rather not have used about us. Like buying a watch and or living within a budget, losing weight is achievable.

It begins with motivation.

Ask any heavy person why they want to lose weight and similar answers surface.
Some want to look better for themselves ir their families while others desire to live a healthier lifestyle.

Listing the reasons why weight loss is desirable is easy.

The dedication among most of us waivers when exercising makes our muscles ache, friends cheerfully slurp sugar-laden sodas, or fat stubbornly refuses to melt away.

Before signing up for the gym or swapping pasta for quinoa, increase your chances of success with some honest realizations.

Accept becoming a weight loss warrior means you are in a war – not just a battle. Your motivation must positively affect you not just physically, but mentally as well.

The latter is a fact many self-help books miss.

Nuts for Improving your Health

www.californiawalnuts.org
If your meals are hitting the doldrums, getting a bit nutty will add pizazz to your low calorie entrées, drinks, and snacks.

However, this does not mean you can slather peanut better between slices of bread, polish off a can of peanuts, or chomp down an Almond Joy bar.

Remember “all things in moderation” is your mantra.

For a delicious wine pairing try a Cab Franc. Its' green and red pepper tastes and earthiness nicely compliment this soup's rustic flavors and slight sweetness.

A black Ceylon-style tea's intensity captures the many flavors of the soup.

Humor Helps a Healthy Lifestyle

Courtesy: www.fit-journey.com
Gulping for air like a goldfish out of its bowl, I looked at the bike’s odometer certain I had covered miles.

Unbelievably, it registered one-half mile.

My calves feel like lead and my thighs had rubbed together so fast, I was certain fire would erupt.

Sighing, I began pedaling again – slowly.

A cheery “on your left” warned of an approaching cyclist.
