Hungry for culture and entertainment people across late 19th and early 20th centuries, America gladly welcomed the Chautauqua's entertainers, writers, musicians and speakers on a variety of subjects.

They traveled the circuits from city to town and village squares to frontier outposts.

As an institution, Chautauqua had such overwhelming national appeal that President Theodore Roosevelt once called it “the most American thing in America.”

Washoe return to “Da ow aga.”

Miwok Dancers of the Central Valley
It is summertime around Lake Tahoe, and as they have for thousands of years, the Washoe American Indians have returned to the sacred land they call “Da ow aga.”

Their ancestors came from lower elevations of the Sierra Nevada's mountains and Great Basin valleys to hunt deer, bighorn sheep and gather medicinal herbs. Before the big snows arrived, they would harvest acorns and pine nuts.

Twain's hatred of Tahoe

http://www.cafepress.com/
Mark Twain hated Lake Tahoe.

Not the physical body of water or its surroundings which he wrote could “restore an Egyptian mummy to his pristine vigor.”

It was, instead, the word “Tahoe” that stuck in the craw of the humorist whose legendary writing career found firm roots in Nevada and California.
